Laws of Virginia: 

Act to open a wagon road from black house in Washington County to Cumberland Mountain passed 18 December 1794.

  • 19 November 1793 - Isaac Burgan Ass. of James Henderson - 200 acres transferred to Lewis Tackett by order.
  • 23 November 1793 - Isaac Burgan Ass. of James Henderson - 279 Acres on Sugar Run transferred to Lewis Tackett on order.
  • 12 December 1793 - Isaac Burgan Ass. of James Henderson transferred to Lewis Tackett 200 acres.

Burgin History

A Direct line of ancestry of Jewel Burgin Barr

Jonathan Burgin - Born 1560 in Sweden.
His son Jonnie Burgin was born 1601 in Sweden.
Jonnies son Yerrick Bergen was born in 1640 in Sweden.
Yerrick moved to Germany, married and had several children.

Yerrick's son Jacob Bergen was born 1695 in Germany.  He and two brothers, John and Isaac, went to Wales.  Jacob married in Wales and changed the spelling of his name to Burgin.  Later, coming to America with his family of several boys and girls, he settled in New Jersey, then moved to Maryland.  Jacob's children were:  Charles, James, Peter, John, Dennis, Benjamin, William, Jacob Jr., Rachel, Nancy, and Mary.

Regarding Jacob's family:  Charles Burgin went to Cuba.  James, Jacob Jr. , Peter, Dennis, William and Benjamin went to Floyd County, Virginia.  Later they moved to North Carolina, settling on the Yadkin River.  Jacob went back to Maryland, Dennis, Peter, and James started to Kentucky with Daniel Boone in 1773.  James settled in Powell's Valley, Lee County, Virginia.  Dennis settled at Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, and Peter settled at Winchester, Kentucky.

Jacob's son, James Burgin who settled in Powell's Valley, Lee County, Virginia, was born in 1744 in Wales.  His wife was Mary McCarty, who was born 1746 in Ireland.  James and Mary contracted for land in Virginia in 1795 and purchased same in 1797.  Both died in Lee County, Virginia and are buried on Sugar Run, Powell's Valley in Virginia.

Regarding James and Mary Burgin's Family:

  1. John, born 1784 and died 1850 in Lee County, Virginia.  Buried in Bethel Methodist Graveyard on Sugar Run.  He was married in 1807 to Susannah Ely.  Susannah was born July 18, 1791 on New River in Eastern Virginia, and died September 10, 1784 in Harrison County, Missouri and was buried in Munsey Cemetery, southwest of Eagleville, Missouri.  She was a double first cousin of Elizabeth Ely, wife of Henry Hyden Woodward.  Susannah went to Missouri from Virginia in 1852 with her son, Simpson W. Burgin and family.  It ahs been said that John Burgin was in the War of 1812.

  2. Isaac, born Nov. 24, 1786.  He was married to Sarah Woodward, who was born July 4, 1796 and who died January 20, 1876.  They moved from Virginia and settled at Lizton, Indiana.

  3. James married Nancy Leddington and they remained in Virginia.

  4. William (Billy) married Sally Sexton and they remained in Virginia.

  5. Jeremiah (Jerry) married a Miss Carr and they settled at Crab Orchard, Kentucky.

  6. Dennis married Letha Munsey and they moved to Indiana.

  7. Isam married a Miss Lucas and they settled in Indiana.

  8. Nancy married a Mr. Scott and they moved to Illinois.

  9. Polly. (Have no data concerning their daughter)

  10. Mary. (Have no data concerning their daughter)

John (Jackie) Burgin, son of James and Mary Burgin, and his wife

Data concerning these children follows:

  1. Floyd, born September 19, 1809 and died November 29, 1878.  Buried in Salem Cemetery by Salem Methodist Church near Royalton, Indiana.  Floyd was one of the organizers of the Salem Methodist Church.  As a young man, Floyd went to Indiana and settled near Royalton, approximately fourteen miles northwest of Indianapolis.  He was married three times and the given names of his wives are Sarah, Malinda, and Lucinda.

  2. Alfred, born August 1, 1811 and died March 4, 1873.  He was married three times - first to a Jackson, then a Carter, then a Pearson.  Alfred remained and lived his life in Virginia.

  3. Simpson W., born December 6, 1813 and died in Harrison County, Missouri December 9, 1877.  His wife was Barbara Jane Woodward, born in Lee County, Virginia November 8, 1818 and died in Harrison County, Missouri February 1, 1903.  Both are buried in Burgin Cemetery on farm they owned three miles west of Ridgeway, Missouri.  Simpson W. was licensed as a Methodist minister in Lee County, Virginia, where he was a teacher and minister.  In Missouri he was the first Harrison County surveyor as well as an extensive land owner and Methodist minister.

  4. Ervin, born in 1815 and died in Illinois in 1847.  His wife was Louisa Daugherty.  They left Virginia and settled in Illinois.

  5. Katie, born in 1817.  She married first a Mr. Howard, then a Mr. Bishop.  Katie left Virginia and settled in Clark County, Missouri.

  6. Polly, born in 1820.  She married Tolbert Blankenship and they moved to Missouri.

  7. Malinda, born in 1823.  Married Wilburn Blankenship and they moved to Missouri.

  8. John Scott, born May 31, 1825 and died March 10, 1901.  He married Mary Pington and they lived their lives in Virginia.

  9. Jasper Leroy, born April 18, 1827 and died March 13, 1901.  He was married twice - first to Sarah Surber, then to Elizabeth Alton.  He moved from Virginia to Kentucky, settling near Somerset.

  10. Dennis, born August 3, 1829 and died January 31, 1910.  He married Susan B. Woodward who was born February 10, 1832 and died May 12, 1903.  They moved from Virginia to Harrison County, Missouri.  Both are buried in Munsey Cemetery southwest of Eagleville, Missouri.

  11. George, born July 2, 1831 and died November 19, 1906.  He was married twice - first to a Welse, then to a Daugherty.  George lived his life in Virginia, resided on the home far which is very near the Bethel Methodist Church on Sugar Run.  He is buried in the Bethel Methodist Cemetery on the hill back of the church.

  12. Susan D., born April 7, 1834 and died February 6, 1901.  Susan was married twice - first to Nobel Covey, then to a Mr. Pibern.  She settled in Harrison County, Missouri.  Buried in Munsey Cemetery southwest of Eagleville, Missouri.

Concerning Those of the Foregoing Generation Who Left Virginia for Missouri

Dennis Newton Burgin and wife, Susan B. Woodward Burgin, left Virginia in company with Soloman Hobbs and wife, Elizabeth Woodward; Ezekial Hobbs and wife, Lydia Woodward; and Henry and Jessie Woodward.  They arrived in Missouri in 1851.  Brother Simpson W. Burgin furnished the wagon that Dennis Newton Burgin used.

Simpson Washington Burgin and wife, Barbara Jane Woodward and three sons; Wilburn Blankenship and wife, Malinda Burgin and two sons; Noble Covey and wife, Susan D. Burgin; and their mother, Susannah Ely Burgin, born July 18, 1791, left Lee County, Virginia in September and arrived in Harrison County, Missouri December 2, 1852.

John Graybill who married Sarah Shelton Woodward went to Missouri in 1838.  He rode a horse from Virginia.  Went back to Virginia and married Sarah Shelton (Sallie) Woodward, then returned to Missouri.

George Fry Ely Woodward went to Missouri from Virginia in March 1856.  Died in Missouri in 1903. 

Tolbert Blankenship and wife, Polly Burgin, made the trip to Missouri and settled there.  Have no details of that trip.

William Munsey and wife, Rhoda Orr Woodward, left Virginia in fall of 1850 for Daviess County, Missouri, stopping near Gallatin, Missouri until spring of 1851 when they moved to Harrison County, Missouri.

 

Simpson W. Burgin, third son of John (Jackie) Burgin and Barbara Jane Burgin had three sons, all born in Lee County, Virginia before the family moved to Harrison County, Missouri in 1852.

 

Data concerning the families of these sons follows:

  1. Dr. Flanary Newton Burgin, born April 26, 1837 and died Oct. 30, 1900.  Buried in Burgin cemetery three miles west of Ridgeway, Missouri.  He was a medical practitioner for many years and served many Missouri communities.  He married Mary Jane Winningham March 26, 1858.  She was born in Ray County, Missouri January 1, 1840.  Died April 21, 1925 and was buried in Delta, Colorado.  Children of Dr. Flanery Newton and Mary Burgin were:

    1. Sarah Malinda Jane, born November 8, 1859 and died November 4, 1898.  Married twice - first to James Hendren, then to John McCammon.  She and James Hendren had two children; Steele who was born in 1877 and died the same year.  Ethol, born in 1879; died in September 2, 1929 and was married to Walter Scafe.

    2. Dr. Charles Herschel, born September 25, 1861.  Date of death unknown.  Married Paralee Hopkins September 14, 1882.  Both are buried in Delta, Colorado.  Their children were:

      1. Dr. James Flanary, born July 11, 1883 and died November 27, 1931.  Married.

      2. Ernest W., born December 5, 1884.  Deceased.  Married Ruth Wood who was born April 10, 1883 and died October 9, 1962.

      3. Samuel Steele, born July 12, 1895.  Died April 25, 1965.  His wife's name is Jane.

      4. Eva, born July 7, 1900.  Married Leroy Marsh.

    3. Margaret L. M., born January 31, 1864.  Deceased.  Married twice - first to Frank Garton, then to Lee Coutts.  Margaret and Frank Garton had the following children:

      1. Cecil, born October 31, 1886 and died June 1, 1930.  Married.

      2. Paul Isam, born September 24, 1889, Deceased.  Married.

      3. Gladys, born April 30, 1891.  Married George Johnson who is deceased.

      4. Percy, born April 19, 1892.

    4. Simpson Dennis, born November 30, 1870 and was killed by lightning September 28, 1888 in Kingman, Kansas.  Buried in Burgin Cemetery three miles west of Ridgeway, Missouri.

    5. Dr. Isam Flanery, born October 3, 1873 and died February 22, 1930.  Was married twice - first to Anna Peery, then to a woman named Margaret.

      1. Col. Howard Burgin, (by first wife), DDS, U.S. Army, Retired. Died April 13, 1967.  Married Evelyn Scafe.

      2. Herschel, died in infancy (by 2nd wife).

      3. Billy Burgin.  No further information known. (by 2nd wife).

    6. Dr. James Henry Francis (known as Frank) DDS, born February 7, 1879 and died June 11, 1938.  Married twice - first to Georgia Travis, then to Mary Johnson.  Moved to Alaska.  Dr. Frank and Mary Burgin's children were:

      1. Virginia Jane, born May 1, 1918

      2. Leona, born July 1920.

      3. Herschel, born April 1922

      4. George, born January 1924.

  2. John Simpson Herschel Burgin, born January 9, 1842 and died July 20, 1935.  He was married twice - first to Laurinda Hendren on December 28, 1859.  She was born July 25, 1841, then to Miranda Emmaline Mullinix, who was born October 9, 1864 and they were married April 9, 1885.  She died May 26, 1938.  John S. H. Burgin was in the War Between the States - Co. G, First Missouri Cavalry, enlisting September 6, 1861.  He was captured and made prisoner at Black River, 12 miles east of Vicksburg, Mississippi May 17, 1863.  He escaped as a prisoner of war June 11, 1863 near Tiffin, Ohio while being transported to a prison camp on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie.
    He became a Mason in 1867 and was a member for 68 years until his death in 1935.  Before he passed away, he was presented the fifty year membership pin.
    Laurinda Burgin is buried in the Burgin Cemetery three miles west of Ridgeway, Missouri.  John S. H. and Miranda Emmaline Burgin are buried in Grandview Cemetery at Albany, Missouri.  Children of John S. H. and Laurinda Burgin were the following:

    1. Susan Rhoda Paulina, born January 3, 1861 and died June 14, 1918.  Her husband was J. Z. Bishop.  There were no children.  Both are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Albany, Missouri.

    2. Mary Eliza, born May 1, 1862 and died May 28, 1864.  Buried in Munsey Cemetery southwest of Eagleville, Missouri.

    3. Margaret Jane Morris, born October 18, 1866 and died January 11, 1924.  Married Thomas H. Taylor.  Margaret Jane Morris is buried in Wray, Colorado.  Thomas H. Taylor is buried at Albert City, Iowa.  Their children were:

      1. Maude, who died February 23, 1887.

      2. Leila, born July 14, 1887.  Married twice - first to Cyrus Lair, then to Dr. B. F. Nitzke.  Cyrus Lair and Lelia and two sons - Forrest and Oscar Lair.

      3. Herschel, born July 1, 1890.  Married twice - names of wives unknown.  Served in Armed Forces during World War I.  One son by first wife, who is Charles Herschel Taylor.

      4. Robin F., born June 14, 1895.  Married twice - first wife's name was Celia, and second wife was Lauretta Cowles.  They were married December 31, 1924 and she died May 9, 1965.  By first wife was one daughter - Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) McIntosh.  By second wife was one daughter - Mrs. Shari Martin. 

      5. John, born December 28, 1897.  Deceased.  Married twice - no information concerning wives.

    4. Henry Simpson Newton, born June 26, 1868 and died November 25, 1932.  Buried in Portland, Oregon.  He had been a school teacher, farmer, Post Master at Ridgeway, Probate Judge of Harrison County for two terms and finally served as President of one of Bethany's banks, Bethany, Missouri.  Married Etta Shumard.  Their children were:

      1. Mauree, born September 28, 1892.  Married three times - first to Dee Pack, then to Fred Thomas, then to Jeff Hamilton.  Mauree and Dee Pack had one son - Donald Pack, who is Special Assistant to the Chief of Atomic Energy Commission.

      2. Bayard Tilden, born May 29, 1894 and died July 30, 1957.  Married twice - first wife's name was Alberta and we have no knowledge of second wife.  Served in Armed Forces during World War I.  Bayard and Alberta had two children.  They were Mrs. Henrietta Duran and William Robert (Billy Bob) Burgin.

      3. George, born December 28, 1898 and died November 27, 1932.  Never married.

      4. Herschel, born June 6, 1901.  Served in World War I and II.  Married twice - first wife was Evelyn Partingdon, born June 6, 1901.  Have no information about other wife.  herschel and Evelyn had one son Victor Lyle Burgin, manager of marbile yard in Albany, Missouri.  Two children were born by other wife.  They were Richard Burgin and Arloa Burgin.

      5. Arloa, born March 8, 1909.  Married to Claude Dillinger, a University professor and school administrator.

      6. Etta Elizabeth Price, born May 1, 1870 and died November 26, 1902.  Buried in Burgin Cemetery three miles west of Ridgeway, Missouri.  Married Elmer E. Davis.

    5. George Alexander Beauregard, born December 2, 1872 and died October 15, 1957.  Buried at Billings, Oklahoma.  for many years he was engaged in the grain elevator business.  Was a Shriner and always very active in Masonic circles, having served as Worshipful Master in several Masonic Lodges.  He married Lillie May Waldron, born December 14, 1881.  Their three children were the following:

      1. Lillian Naomi, born December 22, 1911.  Married twice - no information concerning first husband.  Second husband is E. L. Puryear.

      2. Geraldine, born March 4, 1914.  Married R. W. Duel.  They have three children: George Chanley (Chan) Duel, Thad Duel, and Mrs. Dena Kay Gearhart.

      3. Harold, born June 6, 1916.  Married.  No information concerning wife.  They had one son, Harold George Burgin, now deceased.

    6. Sarah Amanda, born February 13, 1875 and died July 26, 1877.

    7. James I. Mitchell, born February 8, 1877 and died July 28, 1878.

    8. William Jesse Austin, born August 30, 1879 and died November 20, 1956.  Buried in Grandview Cemetery, Albany, Missouri.  He served as a soldier in the Philippine Insurrection.

    9. Walter Lee, born in 1881 and died in 1882.

    10. John Stonewall, born in 1883 and died during the same year.

    11. Max Tabor Cockeral, born August 9, 1884 and died February 13, 1955.  For may years he was a "star" salesman for the New York life Insurance Co. Married Minnie Leazenby.  Both are buried in Masonic Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.  Their children are the following:

      1. William N., born August 7, 1914.  Served in World War II.  He has been in the military service for twenty years and is currently a Staff Sergeant.  has been with the Army of Occupation in England and Germany during recent years.  Married Jessie Sullivent November 22, 1945.  They have one daughter - Miss Victoria Dianne Burgin.

      2. Max N., born October 23, 1920.  Served in the Navy during World War II.  Now engaged in fund-raising counseling an is a member of the staff of the American BUREAU/BEAVER Associates, Inc.

      3. Jane, born April 12, 1928.

    12. Laurinda (Twin), born August 9, 1884 and died in infancy.

      Children of John S. H. and miranda Emmaline Burgin were:

    13. Paris Samuel Warren, born October 22, 1886 and died August 26, 1965.  Buried in Grandview Cemetery, Albany, Missouri.  Served in World War I.  Married Lee Woodward February 23, 1920.  Deceased.

    14. Jewel Stone, born May 2, 1892.  Has had extensive training and experience in the fields of music and dramatic art.  She appeared in dramatic and concert companies before clubs and on Lyceum and Chautauqua platforms for twelve seasons in 43 states of the Union.  One June 18, 1913 she married Charles N. Barr, born November 5, 1890.  After a dozen years of teaching, he spent 38 years of service to voluntary philanthropy.

  3. Henry Steele Burgin, born Mach 10, 1845 and died October 15, 1910.  As a young man, he was a teacher and school administrator.  In Harrison County he raised thoroughbred cattle and horses on his farm west of Ridgeway.  For many years he was one of the leading realtors in Kansas City, Missouri.  In Masonry he took the degrees of the Commandery and of the Shrine.  He married Etta McCammon July 1, 1869.  She was born February 18, 1852 and died Mach 8, 1921.  Both were buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.  To this union four children were born.  They were:

    1. Eliza, born March 28, 1870, died April 4, 1964.  On December 31, 1891 she married Sam Stoll, who was born April 27, 1867 and died December 9, 1945.  Both are buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas.

    2. Dr. Samuel Herschel Christian Burgin, born September 7, 1871 and died November 9, 1943.  He was outstanding minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South for about forty-five years and served many of the largest churches in important cities of the South.  He was a leader in civic, social and Masonic circles.  Married three times - first to Lora Miller on October 18, 1899.  Lora was born January 2, 1875 and died August 22, 1913.  His second wife was Elizabeth Kirkpatrick and they were married March 12, 1916.  She died May 16, 1939.  His third wife was Babe Holt and they were married April 1, 1943.  Three children were born to Dr. S.H.C. and Lora Miller Burgin.  They were:

      1. Herschel Steele Burgin, born may 6, 1903.  He was ordained as a Methodist minister.  Married to Mary Katherine Cole May 12, 1938.  Mary Katherine was born October 25, 1914.

      2. Ruth Evangeline, born March 15, 1907.  Married Atty. James T. Britt September 18, 1930.  Mr. Britt was born in 1904.

      3. Capt. Miller Burgin, born December 9, 1909.  Served in the Armed Forces during World War II.  Married Lois Kilgore of Georgia.

    3. Mary Lydia, born September 7, 1874 and died November 25, 1877.

    4. Willa, born October 20, 1878 and died April 28, 1948.  She is buried in Detroit, Michigan.  Married Ernest Threlkeld September 30, 1902.  He was born February 27, 1879.  They had the following son:

      1. Samuel Edwin, born February 14, 1905.  Now deceased.  Married Margaret Miller July 27, 1940.  Margaret was born May, 1906 and died May 12, 1943.

James Burgin, son of James Burgin and Mary McCarty, married Nancy Leddington.

Their children were:

  1. Ephraim L. Burgan - married Martha Powell.

  2. Brownlow Burgan - married Lydia Harber.

  3. Jerry Burgan - married Anna Clifton.

  4. Rebecca Burgan - married Peter Bays.

  5. Sally Burgan - no information

  6. Nancy Burgan - married Noah Clifton

  7. Polly Burgan - married a Mr. Roberts

 

Ephraim L. Burgan and Martha Powell Burgan had the following issue:

  1. William Grant Burgan - b. Apr. 26, 1867; d. Sept. 1, 1914.  Married Dorothy Buckles.  There may have been a second wife.

  2. James Brownlow Burgan - b. Nov. 18, 1872; d. Dec. 14, 1941.  Married Grace Nelms.

  3. John Patton Burgan - married Nora Blankenship.

  4. Henry Clay Burgan - married Viola Moore.

  5. Susan Burgan - d. 1952. Married T. C. Barlow.

  6. Sarah Burgan - married Charles Fleener.

  7. Jane Burgan - died when 15 years of age.

Note:  In Ephraim Burgan's old Bible Burgan was spelled "Burgin".

 

Susan Burgan and T. C. Barlow had the following children:

  1. Maude Barlow - b. 1898.  Married first a Mr. Sneed.  Her second husband is Jack King.

  2. James D. Barlow - b. 1900.  Have no additional information.

  3. Louise Barlow - b. 1909.  Married O. T. Gibson.

Decem. 13th A. LEWIS TO THE GOVENOR, ENCLOSING PAY ABSTRACT OF MILITIA FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY.

In August, 1792, his Excellency the Governor of Virginia directed the commanding officer of Washington County to draft twenty-five men and sent to the relief of Powell's Valley.  Instead of those men going into service, Col. Arthur Campbell directed Lieut. Willoughby to enlist men in their places, and the following names are those that lived in the valley and never left their Homes:

     This day Wm. Robinson came before me, a Justice of the Peace, and made oath that the within enrolled men are Inhabitants of Powell's valley; the greater part of them have Familys, and when under the command of Lieut. Willoughby were of no service to the frontiers, but rather a prejudice, for their being enlisted prevented the necessary relief coming to us.

Given under my hand this 6th Day of Sept'r, 1793.
