BURGAN

A direct line of descendants of James Burgin and allied families.

James Burgin who married Mary McCarty came to Lee County in 1796 or early 1797.  On Oct. 6, 1797, he purchased 300 acres of land for sixty pounds on Trading Creek from Charles and Eleanor Cocke.  Recorded in Deed Book 1, Page 77.  Children of James and Mary:  John married Susannah Ely; Isaac, married Sarah Woodward; *James, married Nancy Ledington; William married Sarah H. "Sallie" Sexton; Jeremiah married Miss Carr; Dennis married Letha Munsey; Isam married a Miss Lucas; Nancy married Mr. Scott; Polly; and Mary.

*James Burgin born Lee Co. Va. married Nancy Ledington.  They owned a farm on Trading Creek.  Children: Lavina Jane, married Arthur Blankenship; *Jeremiah, married Annaniah "Anna" Clifton; Rebecca, married Peter Bays; Sally; Mary "Polly", married Chapman Roberts; Ephriam Ledington, married Martha Powell; James Brownlow, married 1st Lydia Harber, and 2nd Rosa Yeary; John M. married Bethsheba Woodward; Nancy, married Noah Clifton.

*Jeremiah "Jerry" Burgin born about 1821 Lee Co., Va. married Annaniah "Anna" Clifton born about 1824 in Patrick Co., Va. Children: Elizabeth, married Hezekiah "Carr" Thompson; *John, married Mary Grubb; Rebecca Jane, married Albert W. Farmer; Emily Catherine, married Dr. William Mack Hall; James O., married Elizabeth Ann Hall; Jefferson B., married Sarah Lankford; Noah Clifton, married Mary Matilda Bays.

*John Burgan born about 1847 Lee Co. married Mary Grubb born about 1850 Lee Col, died Dec. 1942.  Children: *William Thomas, married "Sally" Hall; Alexander; Leonard; Noble Vincent, married 1st Sarah Burkhart, 2nd Isabell Philpot; Washington; Emily, married John Thompson; James S., married Martha Powell; Elizabeth, married Hugh Bowling;  Note: "Sally" Hall full name was Sarah Mary Annie Elizabeth Martha Minerva Jane Hall.

*William Thomas Burgan born 2 Feb. 1874 Lee Co., married "Sally" Hall born 23 Mar 1883 Grays Knob, Ky.  He worked for the L&N Railroad.  Children: Mary Marie, 1st married Willard Farmer, 2nd William Thomas Poindexter; *Noyce, married Lillie Lucille Depew; Lester; Minnie Bell, married Charles Garfield Mullins; Bernice, married Joseph Sicker.

*Noyce Burgan born 20 Jan 1908 Hubbard Springs, Va. died 24 May 1984 Cincinnati, Ohio married Lillie Lucille Depew born 21 Apr 1918 Rose Hill, Va. died 20 Jun 1988 Covington, Ky. (daughter of Mack C. and Mary Ann Shell Depew).  Children: *Joyce Marlene Burgan born 1 Aug 1938 Hubbard Springs, Va. married Nobert Edwin John Meyere born 6 June 1933 Covington, Ky. (son of Edward James and Cordula Helena Kleine Meyer), Children: Deborah Lynn; *Rebecca Eloise, married Kenneth Wayne Purcell.

*Rebecca Eloise Meyer born 31 Aug 1967 Covington, Ky. married Kenneth Wayne Purcell born 15 Aug 1963 Alexandria, Va. (son of Frederick Harry and Julie Maxine Williams Purcell) of Tazewell Co., Va. Children: Matthew Steven Purcell born 3 Mar 1988 Naples, Italy.

BURGAN - BLANKENSHIP

John Patton Burgan was born December 22, 1884 on Sugar Run, Lee County, Virginia, on what was known as the Jimmy Pennington homestead.  He was the son of Ephriam Ledington and Martha Powell Burgan.  (See Hattie Bales' Early Settlers of Lee County).

The youngest of seven children, Pat as he was known, grew up in the Sugar Run Community and became a farmer as was the tradition.  At the age of 38, Pat married Nora Elizabeth Blankenship whose Aunt Jane would not allow her niece to date anyone but him.

Nora was the daughter of George Morgan Blankenship (June 17, 1862 - September 9, 1906) and Mary Elizabeth Absher (January 29, 1869 - June 6, 1900).  Her birthplace was in Fleenor Town near Jonesville, Virginia.  She was born on February 18, 1899 and died in Kingsport, Tennessee, on May 15, 1972.

Pat and Nora lived in the Sugar Run Community and later moved to Fleenor Town, living in the log house Nora had gone to live with her Aunt Jane and Uncle Bill Sprinkle at the age of fifteen months after her mother died.  They continued to live there until May 23, 1955 when the family moved to Kingsport, Tennessee.  Both lived on Bridgewater Lane off Stone Drive until Pat died July 17, 1972.  They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Glenna Maude, the oldest child born to Pat and Nora was born on July 20, 1923.  Billy Ralph (Bill) was born September 12, 1925 and Charles Sherman born in 1929 lived seven months.  Glenna and Bill were born in the same house as their father on Sugar Run and Sherman in Fleenor Town.

Bill married Bettye Walters from Kingsport, Tennessee, on July 24, 1954.  Their children are Billy Patton (Pat)(November 9, 1955) and Karen Lea (June 23, 1960).  His grand children are Kristi Lea (October 19, 1977) and Billy John (B. J.)(December 2, 1978).  Pat married Ginger Lowery from Portland, Oregon, on April 2, 1976.  Karen married Charlie Mullins on July 26, 1986.

Bill went to work for Blue Ridge Glass Corporation (now AFG Industries, Kingsport, Tennessee, in 1948 after returning from military service.  He will retire in February 1991 as the senior employee.

Glenna Maude attended Knoxville Business College for a year in 1942 before beginning work for Selective Service at Jonesville, later at the University of Tennessee before moving to Kingsport to work for a trucking firm.  Several years later she started working for a building contractor where she is presently emplyed.

John "Jackie" Burgin born 1784 in Lee County, died 1850; married Susannah Ely 1791-1874 of Lee County.  Their children: I. Floyd Burgin; II. Alfred Burgin; III. Simpson W. Burgin; IV. Ervin Burgin; V. Katie Howard Bishop; VI. Polly Blankenship; VII. Malinda Blankenship;

VIII. John Scott Burgin born May 31, 1825, and died March 10, 1901.  He married Mary Pennington 1829-1902, daughter of David and Jane Stamper Pennington, and had three children.

  2. John F. Burgin born August 6, 1853, and died in 1898.  He married Martha Malinda Taylor 1856-1929, daughter of Charlie J. and B.M. Taylor
    1. John Simpson "Simp" Burgin lived 1873-1955 and married Emma Pearl Harber 1873-1910, daughter of William and Lucy A. Davenport Harber.  They moved from Lee County to Marcus, Washington, in 1908 and returned to Lee Co. ten years later;
      1. Floyd Anderson 1892-1983; married Opal Patty; lived Spokane, Washington; daughter Leola married Albert Gustafson;
      2. Dora Ann 1894-1982; married a Davis then married Alec Moegelin; lived in Texas; children Raymon, Jimmy, and Louise Davis.
      3. Ella Otho 1897-1989; lived in Lee County; Children Frank, Eugene, Henry, Marie, Donald, Richie, and Amy;
      4. Raymon Luther 1899-1953; lived Beverly Hills, California; married three times; one adopted child.
      5. Willard Dennis Burgan born Nov. 15, 1902, and died Feb. 2, 1953.  He married Ida Mae Wheeler 1905-1972, duaghter of George Washington and Amanda Taylor Couch (?) Wheeler.
        1. Bernard (1924-1988); married Ollie Kirk; children Leon, Roger, Danny;
        2. Curtis (b. 1927) married Helen Cooper; Children: Nancy, Audrey, Phillis, Norma Lynne, Curtis Jr.: divorced.
        3. Tinley (b. 1929) married Lou Ewing; children Donna McQuren, Rickie, Rocky, Jeffrey.
        4. George (b. 1931) married Frankie Young; children Nancy and Denny divorced; retired in the army.
        5. Shirley (b. 1935) married Virgil Robbins who died in 1962; children Judy Benefield, Margaret Milsap, Johnny, Vicky, Curby; next married Omer Rhea.
        6. Carl (b. 1937) married Gracie Taylor b. 1941 and had seven children: Willard, Patricia Robbins d 1988, Teresa nef, Richard, Virgil, George, Michael.
      6. John Andrew 1905-1931, married Mollie Stacy; daughter Gladas.
      7. Charles Edgar 1908-1944; single spent 13 years in the army; died in prison camp.
      8. William Victor 1910-1976; married Vina Lambert; lived in South Carolina; children Wanda, Billy, Lowell, Kenneth, Robert, Johnny, Sheila.
    2. Charles Mitchell 1876-1968; married Myrtle Poteet; child Verner.
    3. Henderson 1878-1892; killed at 14 by logs rolling onto him.
    4. Andrew P. "Andy" b. 1880; married Rebecca Thompson; children Curtis, Ray, Fred, Ulea, and Lea.
